Rewards

The reward obtained when opening a chest varies depending on its type:

Common chest

0 2 Protogems (only when the chest is opened for the first time)

Sophisticated chest

Special chests

Some special chests, despite belonging to one of the types of chests mentioned above, contain different rewards:

A chest in Stormterror's Lair contains the Mushroom Pizza recipe.
A chest at the top of Mt. Tianheng contains the Fried Meat recipe.
A chest in the Bank of the Northern Kingdom in Liyue contains 200 Blackberries.
A chest in the Komore Teahouse in Inazuma contains 180 Blackberries, 000 Pieces of Raw Meat, and 3 Scaradiablos.
Some chests in Dragonwing contain Scarlet Agates. These chests are covered in a reddish aura.
Some chests during Bennett's encounters may contain 1 Blackberry, 1 Radish, or 1 Cabbage.

Most of the common chests are in plain sight, although you usually have to get rid of the enemies guarding them first. Others will be covered by a small layer of stone (can be broken with jaws), by thorns or frozen (can be set on fire to disappear).

Other ways to get chests are:

Completing all kinds of puzzles (Elemental Columns, Lightning Probes, etc).
Completing time trials.
Chasing Seelies.
Breaking certain unstable walls.
Lighting torches.
Breaking small piles of rocks.
Shooting balloons.
Digging in certain areas. These usually have a sign in front or some kind of sign, but not always.
Completing some missions.

Compass Treasure Hunter

Each region has its own Treasure Hunter Compass. These, unfortunately, only guide towards those chests that are visible, and will not guide any puzzle, Seelie or any other hidden chests with the naked eye.

Chest quantity

The chests you can open in Mondstadt are ± 512.
The chests you can open in Liyue are ± 1070.
The chests you can open in Dragonwing are ± 200.
The chests that you can open in Inazuma (adding all its islands) are ± 550.

Achievements

The achievements that can be obtained by opening a certain amount of chests are:

Unbreakable by opening a chest in the middle of the heart-shaped rock formation.
Windcatcher Treasure Hunter on Opening 100/200/400 cofres and Mondstadt.
Rock-steady treasure hunter when opened 200/400/800 cofres en Liyue.
Mountain treasure hunter when opening 40/80/160 Chests in Dragonspin.
Electric Shock Treasure Hunter (I) When Opening 100/200/300 Chests on Inazuma's Narukami, Kannazuka, and Yashiori Islands.
Electric Shock Treasure Hunter (II) When Opening 40/80/160 chests on the Watatsumi and Seirai islands of Inazuma.

Chests that appear specifically for certain missions do not count towards achievements.
