Profile

«The secretary of the Yuehai Pavilion, the blood of the Chilin enlightened beasts flows through her veins. »

Appearance

It is half human and half Adeptus (more specifically half Chilin), so it has characteristics of both regular people and characteristics seen only in gods.

She is a tall, slim woman with purple eyes and long blue hair that ends in purple, held in a ponytail. Although it resembles a human, it has red horns that are turned back along with its hair, similar to the horns of a goat.

Around his neck, there is a golden bell. She wears a black suit with gold accents under a purple and white bodice with long tailcoat-like ends, with a matching pair of separate sleeves. Her fitted jumpsuit is at the back of her neck to make a bun. She has white heels with gold details and gray bottoms, with red knots around her ankles. His Vision Cryo is on his left hip with a knot in the shape of a red clover.

Personality

Ganyu is usually very quiet and reserved due to her Chilin heritage. The Chilin are also vegetarians; as such, he does not eat any meat dishes, including vegetarian dishes that have been fried in animal fat. Both Xiangling and his father point out that whenever he visits Wanmin Restaurant, he always eats small amounts. She also completes whatever is given to her, be it homework or food, even if she is reluctant to do so.

Unlike most of the other Adeptus who became isolated, Ganyu, like Madam Ping, chose to actively guide humanity and has served as the uninterrupted secretary general of the Seven Stars of Liyue for thousands of years. The more important the task, the more effort she puts into it, but she also becomes increasingly nervous and more prone to making mistakes.

She also has an unusually impressive work schedule that she always follows to the letter. Despite having a huge workload and frequent overtime, Ganyu is never fazed by work. She has a good working relationship with her colleagues, as she is willing to share her knowledge and ideas to help them with any problems they have, and they in turn respect her very much. Due to his constant overtime, Ganyu has very few friends outside of work.

Surprisingly, Ganyu gets along well with Beidou, but the captain's bad reputation with Liyue's Seven Stars causes them to keep their friendship a secret, lest she put her in a negative position. Ganyu is one of the few who see Beidou in a positive light, even breaking her calm temper when she hears bad rumors about Beidou, knowing that she is not as they say she is.

She is a devoted follower of Morax and hopes to follow in his footsteps to protect Liyue. She initially had trouble working with Keching due to her controversial comments about him, but she is slowly getting to grips with her. Due to her age, she is very forgetful, as she often forgets important details that cause her a lot of embarrassment. It is relatively sleepy and is very sensitive to both its horns and its weight.

History

As the secretary of the Yuehai Pavilion, Ganyu performs many tasks that ordinary people do not see. The calculations and data behind every Bright Stars decision in Liyue, as well as every ordinance and regulation that is announced, is all the meticulous work he does.

Every sunrise he sits by the pier, enjoying his breakfast in silence. Still, by the time the sun has fully risen, he will have returned to the Yuehai Pavilion overlooking Yujing Terrace, to continue fulfilling his contract, one he signed three thousand years ago with Rex Lapis.

Character story 1

Ganyu is not the secretary of any Liyue leader, but the general secretary of the entire Bright Stars organization. Beneath his gentle exterior, Ganyu is as persistent as stone itself. This was something that Rex Lapis, the leader of the Adeptus, noticed early on. Thus, when the Bright Stars first emerged centuries ago, Ganyu was his secretary.

Through the years and the changes in the Star roster, Ganyu has stood by his side through the centuries. This has also meant that the piles of paperwork from various departments and offices in Liyue have fallen on their shoulders as well. But even though his workload has multiplied by seven, a hundred or even a thousand times, his sense of responsibility has never wavered. Someone once asked what the source of their motivation was and received an answer that was not entirely consistent with the question.

"What I've done ... is nothing compared to what Rex Lapis has accomplished."

Character story 2

"I work for the welfare of all living things in Liyue."

In almost all circumstances, Ganyu is a very reliable secretary. It's hard to imagine someone surpassing her in the face of such a huge workload, especially considering her unique and penetrating insights into all of Liyue's affairs.

However, its reliability can only be guaranteed in "almost all circumstances". The more important the matter, the more Ganyu strives for perfection and the more nervous she becomes. Under pressure, his nervousness results in the occasional mistake.

One such incident occurred during the Rite of Descent, the most important annual event on Liyue's calendar.

Ganyu arrived three minutes late to the Rite and had to push his way through the crowd in full view of everyone. Later, with a face as red as a tomato, he stuttered his way through an unconvincing explanation, while profusely apologizing to Rex Lapis in his heart. His colleagues assumed that there must be some reason for the error. Those who did not know her well saw that Rex Lapis did not care and therefore did not pay attention to the incident. Those closest to her were privately concerned and asked if she needed an adjustment in workload or a short vacation, but Ganyu refused.

"I spent two hours making sure I wasn't wearing anything very similar to last year's Rite ..."

Needless to say, Ganyu was unwilling to admit that this was the real reason for her delay.

Character story 3

Long enough for the glazed lilies that once abounded in the Dihua Swamp to be washed away by the floods, and long enough for the thriving settlement that sprouted on the Guili Plains to be ruined in the war.

How short is a thousand years? To Ganyu, it has felt shorter than the blink of an eye. For an unimaginable time to mortals, Ganyu has been working on all sorts of things on Yujing Terrace.

She recorded the lifting and demolition of every building and witnessed the rise to prosperity of all industries. Ganyu's sense of objectivity towards the passage of time comes from the endless amount of data he has to search for and the ever increasing number of colors he comes across that he needs to categorize them all.

During all this time, his way of thinking has never changed: he constantly vacillates between his human and Adeptus halves.

On the one hand, Ganyu his Chilin blood has a hard time understanding deadly disputes. But on the other hand, his human blood reminds him that he must always hope that one day he can fit in.

Character story 4

Outside the confines of his work, Ganyu very quickly shows how different he is from most people.

He has a habit of taking afternoon naps and has a surprisingly accurate internal clock. When it's lunchtime, no matter where you are, you'll just snuggle up and fall asleep on the spot. Even the raucous dance of the hilichurls will fail to wake her up.

These habits were at first just a running joke within the Seven Stars.

But once, after accompanying the then Tianxuan to lunch outside the city, a well-fed Ganyu simply crawled to the haystack on the nearest road. She ended up being transported to the Panatano Dihua, waking up only after hitting her head during unloading. Unable to find Ganyu anywhere for the next three hours, and knowing that he would not leave without warning, Tianxuan nearly filed a missing person report.

After receiving a stern warning to "only take afternoon naps where it is safe," Ganyu replied, "Well ... isn't it safe everywhere from Liyue?"

Perhaps, with the mixture of enlightened human and beast blood flowing through his veins, Ganyu's understanding of world affairs is a little different from most humans.

Character story 5

Ganyu's Chilin heritage is little known in Liyue port. Every time someone walking the Feiyun Slope asks her about the obvious protrusions in her hair, she says they are ornamental relics.

"If I told them the truth, they would distance themselves from me ..."

Despite never having been on particularly close terms with the citizens of Liyue in the first place, Ganyu still wouldn't regard distancing as a good thing. His most important reason for hiding the truth is to prevent curious bystanders from touching his Chilin horns.

After all, a Chilin's horns are a sensitive part of its body, both physically and mentally.

Another secret Ganyu is eager to keep hidden is the fact that she is taking care of her physique.

Chilin are strict vegetarians, but Liyue is a true powerhouse of gastronomic delights, with even vegetarians struggling to control their appetite.

Ganyu, who has become accustomed to life in the city, is very attentive to matters related to her weight and physique.

Whenever she is attracted to a delicious dish, she will try to assert her self-control. For Ganyu, the difficulty of such a challenge is only exceeded by finding a flaming flower on the top of Dragonwing.

But she's not one to give up halfway through the climb. During the Archon War, once he choked a giant monster with ease after getting stuck in his throat when he tried to eat it, said monster had fatally underestimated just how wide his waist was.

For Ganyu, avoiding similarly embarrassing episodes in the future is an absolute must.

The Flora of Yujing Terrace

The handwritten notes detail the morphological characteristics and behavior of the plants on Yujing Terrace, with each beautiful stroke written by Ganyu's own hand.

The notes are concise, comprehensive and well categorized, and even offer some ideas that would be difficult to find elsewhere in the market. These include tips on caring for glazed lilies and methods for grafting silk flowers. In readability and scientific accessibility, they are close to the standard of official publications.

Or rather, this is the experience if one begins to read from the front. However, jump near the end and one might be dumbfounded.

The last pages are a shocking eruption of black ink and frantically scrawled text. By patiently and carefully reading between the lines, one might discover that these notes were, at one time, various methods of growing vegetables.

"But if I learn to grow vegetables, I will be even less able to control my appetite."

With his hands clenched into fists, it was with great difficulty that Ganyu erased the results of his investigation. Later, while watering the plants on an empty stomach, Ganyu found herself burying her head in a thicket of silk flowers, fantasizing that they were sweet flowers in an effort to comfort herself. Many more fancy sweet flowers followed shortly after during her afternoon nap ...

Vision

The Chilin are models of benevolence among the Adeptus, drinking only fresh water and eating only plants. They won't hurt the flies, and they won't break the bruised reed. They do not travel in groups and no traps will hold them down. They are calm but calm, active but reserved - a gentle and graceful breed.

Yet when an evil beast emerged from the sea and threatened the land beneath their feet, they did not sit idly by or choose peace when there was none. Three thousand years ago, Ganyu answered the call of Morax, Archon Geo, aiding him in the Archon Wars. And when the war ended, he decided to stay in Liyue and help the humans build a new politics there.

The first generation of Bright Stars would need support, and she took on this task as a matter of course, becoming their secretary. The moment he made that decision, a Vision appeared on his hip, granting him the power to resonate with the world to a degree beyond his natural abilities. If he would become strong enough not to need it anymore, or if he would use it as a last resort in Liyue's defense ... Anyway, he chose to serve as a bridge between the Adeptus and the humans. His Vision, then, was proof and witness of his new duty.

    Curiosities

    • Ganyu leaves his own message on the notice board at the Wangshu Inn, albeit anonymously.
    • Judging from Ganyu's "About Us: Request" voice line, it could be hinting that Ganyu recognizes that the Traveler is not from Teyvat.
    • The Cloud Preserver said that when Ganyu was young, she loved to have her horns stroked. Also when someone looks at her for a long period of time it makes her blush.
    • Ganyu's Chinese voice actress Su Lin (林 簌) is one of the directors of Genshin Impact's Chinese voice actors. It also gives Jean a voice.

    Etymology

    • Ganyu's name is probably a reference to Ganlu (Chinese: 甘露 "Sweet dew"), a term used to describe icy fog in East Asian Buddhist traditions.
